Hoan Kiem Lake — "Lake of the Restored Sword" — sits at the very heart of Hanoi. The lake and its iconic red Huc Bridge are one of Vietnam's most photographed landmarks, and a morning walk around it reveals the true soul of the city.
The Legend of the Restored Sword
According to Vietnamese legend, King Le Loi was given a magical sword by the Golden Turtle God to drive out Chinese invaders in the 15th century. After victory, while boating on the lake, the turtle surfaced and reclaimed the sword. The lake was renamed Hoan Kiem (Restored Sword) to honour this legend.
Turtles still live in the lake today — though sightings of the rare giant softshell turtle are extremely rare.
Ngoc Son Temple
Ngoc Son Temple sits on a small island in the northern part of the lake, connected to shore by the iconic red-painted Huc Bridge ("Morning Sunlight Bridge").
