Vietnam has regional seasons. March–April and September–November are often comfortable for multi-region trips. The south is driest roughly December–April; the north has cool winters and a rainy summer. Central Vietnam peaks in dry months outside the late autumn storm season.

April–May and September–October usually bring clearer skies and pleasant temperatures. Winters (December–March) can be cool and misty; summer may bring rain and tropical storms. Always check forecasts before an overnight cruise.

April–May can be extremely hot in many regions. Central Vietnam can see typhoons and flooding in the late rainy season (often September–November). During Tet (Lunar New Year), many businesses close and transport is crowded—book early if you travel then.

Layers for the north in winter; light breathable clothes and sun protection for the south and central summers; a light rain jacket in wet season; and modest clothes for temples. Mountain areas like Sapa need warmer layers even in summer evenings.
