Private car takes about 5–6 hours. Overnight buses and train-to-Lao Cai plus transfer options also exist. Many travellers leave Hanoi in the evening and arrive for a morning trek.
Local guides add cultural context and help with village paths and weather changes. Short walks near town are possible independently, but overnight village treks are best with a licensed guide.
