It depends on your nationality. Some countries qualify for short visa exemptions; others need an e-visa via immigration.gov.vn (typically processed within a few working days). Check the latest rules before you fly, as policies change.

Violent crime against tourists is uncommon. The biggest day-to-day risks are traffic and petty theft (especially bag snatching on motorbikes in big cities). Use hotel safes, keep phones secure, and cross streets carefully.

Dress modestly: cover shoulders and knees. Remove hats (and often shoes) when entering sacred sites. Bring a light scarf or long pants if you plan temple visits on hot days.

Vietnam is increasingly card- and QR-friendly in cities, but street food, markets, and small shops still prefer cash (VND). ATMs are widely available; withdraw as needed rather than carrying large amounts.

In major destinations—Hanoi Old Quarter, Hoi An, Halong tourism hubs, and Ho Chi Minh City—hotel and restaurant staff usually speak basic English. A translation app and a few Vietnamese phrases (xin chào, cảm ơn) help outside tourist zones.
